Hard work and dedication were recognised last weekend as 10 local volunteer firefighters were honoured for their service to the Stratford Fire Brigade.

Assistant Regional Fire Commander Pat Fitzell from New Plymouth presented the awards and medals.

"It is great to see so many family and friends gathered today to thank these special people for their outstanding contribution they give to the Stratford community. Their generosity is very impressive."

Senior Station Officer Tony Foley and Senior Firefighter Leonard Erickson were honoured first. They both received a Long Service/Good Conduct Medal for 14 years of service. Senior Firefighter John Clarry was recognised for his 21 years of service by receiving his first clasp.

Maurice Kelly, a life member, Senior Station Officer and Volunteer Support Officer, was honoured for his incredible 42 years of service and received his fourth clasp.

Selwyn Vesty, a Senior Firefighter, was given his two-year bar, but missed the closing date to receive his first clasp for his 21 years of service.

Station Officer Bevin Chapman was recognised with a two-year bar and has given 11 years of service so far. The last four volunteers to be recognised were Mike Nager, Andy Waite, Sean Waite and Jonathan Turner. Each firefighter was presented with a three-year certificate.

As well as honouring these valuable community members, the station celebrated the 50th anniversary of its present site on Miranda Street.

Ex-Chief Fire Officer and life member Barrie O'Donnell, with his wife Anne, cut the cake to mark this occasion. Congratulations!
