MIKE and Helen Cameron of Tariki were chuffed last week to be presented with the Classic Challenge Trophy at the New Zealand MotorSport Awards in Wellington.
The rally trophy is for the 2009 Champion Driver/Co-Driver in the Classic Class.
This class represents fully certified classic cars that were built before January 1, 1987.
The couple drive a 1977 Mitsubishi Lancer, 1597cc, in original format as came from the factory floor.
There were five two-day rounds, all over the country in the 2009 New Zealand Rally Championships, and it was the third consecutive year Mike and Helen had entered. They were placed fifth overall in 2007 and fourth overall in 2008.
The couple said while they were not as quick as the more powerful cars, they kept on the road for the whole series and put a lot of work in preparation of ‘Lil Evo,’ as their car is called.
Of the five rounds they had a first placing, two seconds and a third. At the fifth round in Nelson they were excluded from results after towing a competitor to safety.
They still amassed enough points to take the title.
This year they plan to enter Rally Wairarapa as a ‘shake down’ before competing in the 2010 Silver Fern Marathon rally in November.
