RUNNING, jumping and plenty of action were in ample supply at the 2008 North Island Colgate Games.

The athletic meet was open to children aged 7-14 years and organisers were pleased with the 1350 entries.

Entrants came from across the North Island, with an exceptionally strong field of Taranaki talent on show.

Held at Inglewood's TET Stadium, Jubilee Park, the three-day event began on Friday, January 4, with a grand parade.

Athletes aged 7 to 9 years received first, second and third placings, but all competitors received a ribbon for their efforts.

Athletes aged 10 to 14 years compete in heats, semi finals and finals for the top three placings, and medals are given to the winners.

New Zealand selectors were at the games looking for talented youngsters to represent the country in the upcoming Pacific School Games in Canberra, Australia later this year.

During the event, the stands were always packed with supporters and locals watching the participants impressive skill.

The organising committee spent the past two years working on the finer details and can be proud of a job well done.

Colgate Games ground announcer Frank Vosper has been lending a hand for the past 10 years and complimented organisers on a great job.

He also said the games were one of the best events in new Zealand for young athletes.

"They love it. Three days of competition and fun. We've been lucky this year. We've had three days of fantastic weather."

One of the organisers Merv Watt summed up the event with one word brilliant.

"I've been going to these events since it was last in Inglewood in 2001. This year was up with the best of them.

Merv continued to say that New Zealand officials were pleased with the help from Taranaki officials and said they wished they could take them to the South Island Games next week.

"There's been a huge amount of positive feedback."

The organising committee would like to thank everyone who helped make the event a complete success.
