THE Taranaki Winter Swimming Championships held in conjunction with the Three Region Championships proved to be a winner.

Held at the TSB Pool in Stratford swimmers competed in five sessions from Friday night to Sunday afternoon, with competitors coming from Wanganui, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Taranaki. This provided strong competition in all events.

The number of visitors competitors, supporters, parents and marshals filled all local and some outside accommodation. Extra seating was brought into the pool to cope with numbers, which were close to 300.

One top New Zealand official described the meet as grass roots swimming in an environment without electronic timing, in a pool that needs an urgent rebuild, but a credit to all swimmers and officials who handled the less than ideal indoor conditions.

The third three-region competition will be held in conjunction with the Waikato Winter Championships on August 30-31, with the Three Regions Grand Prix in Te Awamutu on September 13.
