Stratford swimmers competed strongly at the 2013 New Zealand national junior age group championships in Wellington last weekend.
The Stratford Swimming Club with 11 swimmers placed fourth on points nationally from 70 clubs competing.
Stratford won 21 national medals - five gold, six silver and 10 bronze. The local Flyers squad achieved 47 personal best times.
Joshua Gilbert again shone in the 11- year boys events; outstanding with four golds (50m and 200m backstroke, 200m breaststroke and 50m freestyle), four silver (100m and 220m freestyle, 50m and 100m breaststroke) and two bronze (100m backstroke and 200m individual medley). He also broke his own Taranaki records, lowering his 2.23.26min in the 200m freestyle to 2.21.99 and his 2.56.59min in the 200m breaststroke to 2.54.20min.
Chris Johnson (12yr boys) won gold in the 200m breaststroke, silver in the
200m freestyle, 50m and the 100m breaststroke, and bronze in the 100m and the 400m freestyle.
Claudia Taylor in the 11yr girls took bronze in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, as well as in the 50m and the 100m backstroke.
Other top 10 national placings:
Chris, 8th 50m freestyle; Claudia, 4th 200m backstroke, 5th 200m individual medley; Rebecca Brown (11), 4th 50m backstroke, 6th 200m freestyle, 8th 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle, 9th 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke.
Laurie Collins (11) placed 10th in the 200m breaststroke and Emma O'Connell 10th in the 50m backstroke.
Nebulite Flyers Swimmers Ryan Cooper, Brooke Wells, Matthew Anderson, Chris Johnson and Brittany Taylor will compete in the National Age Group senior championships in Wellington, which started yesterday and is on to March 2.
