More than 25 young swimmers from Taranaki swim clubs attended a Taranaki Electricity Trust Swimming Camp last weekend. Head coach was Richard Sutton from Hamilton, assisted by Commonwealth Games and Olympic swimmer Liz Van Welie. Richard is the head coach for the Hamilton club and Liz is employed by Sport Bay of Plenty and resides in Tauranga . Liz was a silver medallist for the 400m medley at the Manchester Commonwealth Games, and swam the 200m butterfly at the Sydney Olympics, 2002 in a NZ-record time. She also made a NZ record for the 400m medley. The swimmers were kept busy over four two-hour sessions learning training ethics, technique, dry land work, goal setting, team building and team culture. Brick Mathieson from the TET spoke to the swimmers and parents and said that the Taranaki Electricity Trust was keen to sponsor the young people of Taranaki and was impressed with the calibre of young people at the camp. The Trust is also sponsoring a camp for senior swimmers at the TSB Pool in Stratford from July 3-8.
