STRATFORD’S legendary New Year’s Eve Race Day once again brought the old, the young, the serious and the not-so-serious all out to play for a fun and sun-filled day at Te Kapua Racecourse.
Almost 3000 people made their way to the races, bringing with them plenty to eat and drink, a whole heap of blankets and chairs to sit on, wide hats, sunscreen, umbrellas and sunshades, and positive attitude by the heap.
“Once again, it was a great family day out, and people really seemed to be enjoying themselves,” said Bryan Forbes of the Stratford Racing Club.
With rides, stalls, hot food, performers, bright colours and the fun and excitement that typifies a race day, a great event was assured for all those in attendance.
And it wasn’t just families who got to enjoy the celebration either – the Stratford Cup – renamed the Barry Holland Memorial Cup – was won by ‘Biggles,’ ridden by jockey, David Walker and owned by Ron and Shirley Miller of Inglewood.
“It was great to see local horses winning races,” said Bryan.
While the horse action was a thrill to behold, for most the day was about chilling-out, relaxing and generally enjoying the ambience – all accompanied by a bright sunny day, peppered ever-so-gently by the odd welcome cool breeze.
