Well, what great weather for golf. Last week Stratford sent two teams to Manaia to compete in the regional Clytie Vine Stableford Competition. The Stratford No 2 team, comprising Shirley Hosking, Christine Taylor, Sandra Hancock and Elaine Nicholls, won the cup. This is the first time Stratford have won this cup which was given by the late Clytie Vine who was a regular golfer at Manaia and loved having the clubhouse full of ladies playing golf. Her family gave the cup in her memory. This is the 20th year the cup has been competed for.
With such great weather, great scores have been recorded. Veronica Hignett had a nett 64, Sandra Hancock 66, Janet Crowe 67, Maxine Trotter 68, Lea Gibbons and Lynette Harrison net 69. Birdies were also achieved by Jenny Hignett, Miro Elliott, Caral Hill, Janet Crowe, Glenys Thomson and Mary McQuay. Our chip-in competition is causing much delight, with Janet Crowe, Marlene Ridley and Mary McQuay all succeeding. A bonus after golf on Tuesday was having ex-Stratford resident, Leigh Carrington, coaching on the short game. Leigh has been a professional coach for 11 years, coaching two years in Melbourne and now nine years in Singapore. Our sincere thanks to Leigh for giving of her time while home visiting her parents.
Last Saturday we played the first round of the Helena and Doris Stableford Competition. There were two good rounds from Sybil Homann with 39 points and Ann Braithwaite with 37 points. On Sunday 18 members took advantage of coaching from professional, John Garner. We will watch their progress closely over the next few weeks. Weekend Ladies please remember that the Jim Arthur Memorial is being played next Saturday. Our next official competition will be the first round of Top Cat to be played on March 17. We have a new group of beginners starting so if you would like to join in on a Saturday afternoon, please phone Pauline Downs on 765 8270.
