Students from Stratford Primary School cleaning up our dirty streets.
The Stratford community was out in force last week during the annual Clean Up New Zealand Taranaki campaign. The campaign is run annually and involves people right across the country out on the streets and in parks picking up rubbish. Locally, the people of Stratford always support the week very well and Stratford District Council campaign organiser, Linda Paterson, said she was thrilled with this year's turnout.
"Our district always has a strong team of locals out on the streets with bags and gloves picking up litter. Once again, over 1000 people from Stratford were involved in this year's campaign - not bad for a district of less than 9000 people," she said.
As well as cleaning up our environment, the campaign makes the participants more aware of the amount of rubbish people drop on a daily basis. "They are always surprised at what people throw away and how much there is - it really is shocking when you start looking.
"We are lucky that we are supported by J and L Limited who picked up all the bags of rubbish for disposal as part of their contribution to the campaign and also Mitre10 who gave a discount on some of the gloves used by participants. We appreciate their support," Mrs Paterson said.
"Thanks also go to Kate Morgan from New Plymouth District Council who co-ordinated the regional campaign and to all the people from Pembroke School, Stratford Primary School, Stratford High School, St Joseph's Primary School, Midhirst School, Toko Primary School, Sunflowers on Broadway, Contact Energy Ltd and Stratford District Council, as well as other individuals who participated in the big clean-up."
