The Nebulite Taranaki Flyers Swim squad were in top form at their championship meet.
They broke four Taranaki records, won the under 13yrs and the 4x50m boys' freestyle relay and attained national
qualifying times at all levels as well as achieving a large number of personal best times at the Central North Island Swimming Champs held over three days in Rotorua.
The winning 4x50m relay team were Mathew Anderson (13), Cameron Toft (13), Cameron Trethewey (11) and Joshua Gilbert (10), with a time of 2.01.29.
Ryan Cooper not only set a new Taranaki record in the 15yrs 100m butterfly with his time 59.83, but he is also the first boy from Taranaki to swim it in under one minute. The previous record was 1.00.28, set in 2003. He also set a new record of 2.14.07 in the 200m butterfly (previously 2.17.00), with Dylan Arlidge (15) setting a new record time in the 50m breaststroke (32.19 to the previous 32.33). Joshua Gilbert raised the bar in the 10yrs 200m breaststroke to 3.02.67 (previously 3.09.04), while Chris Johnson also broke the record with his 3.02.75.
Ending in the top three in each category were Ryan who won the 15yrs 200m butterfly, took a second in the 100m
butterfly, 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke, and a third in the 50m backstroke. Dylan Arlidge got a second in
the 15yrs 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and 100m medley, and a third in the 200m medley. Joshua Gilbert
came first in the 10yrs 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, and second in 200m medley.
He also swam into third place in the 200m backstroke and 100m freestyle.
Cameron Trethewey won the 11yrs 100m and 200m backstroke and came second in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle. Chris Johnson secured second place in the 11yrs 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and 200m medley and a third in the 100m and 200m freestyle events.
Swimmers who beat their personal best times were Cormach and Joellen Hughson-How, Caitlyn O'Connell,
Rebecca Brown, Rachel Buckthought, Zahn Collins, Holly Coplestone, Ella Dazley, Lania Hancock, Bayley Knofflock, Brittany and Claudia Taylor, Cameron and Daniel Tofts, Rebekah Trethewey, Bailee West, and Jordon and Lauren Wood.
