THE Taranaki Road Cycling Champs were held on Sunday April 11 at the Pukengahu Block.
The event was held in brilliant weather at an excellent location, but with 37 riders the event was considered a poor turnout from cyclists in the Taranaki.
Lee Evans, a regular visitor from Wellington, took out the open men’s race in a sprint finish from Stratford Cycling’s Simon Brown. Nic Cox’s from the New Plymouth Club won the senior woman’s title.
Clive Telford had a handy lead in the masters 4 Road Race but unfortunately punctured on the second to last lap, and gave away the lead and win to a fast finishing Barry Jordan.
John Dean easily won the masters 6 grade, not surprising really, considering that he still pushes riders less than half his age.
One man who doesn’t show his age is Bob Marsh, Masters 8, who completed the 75k ride in his division with ease. Good effort Bob for doing the solo effort.
Stephen Hills, from the New Plymouth Cycling Club, completed his laps showing true character, only having the use of one leg and partial use of another arm. The course is hard enough getting around being able bodied – again, top effort mate.
This Sunday the club has the Jordan Cup race over 60k’s. Recreational riders are also catered for with a ride from Stratford to the top of the Douglas Saddle and back.
Kids will have a race down East Road to the cemetery and back.
Stratford Cycling Club caters for everyone from the top notch racing people to the recreational riders, down to the kids just getting into cycling, so we welcome anyone who just wants to check the club out.
Meet at the clubrooms at the Masonic Hall next to the Stratford railway station on Sunday 9.30 am on Anzac Day.
