IT was such a success in 2008; they have decided to do it again.
Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust is offering the public an opportunity to view the pest-proof fence up close and personal on Sunday April 11, as a fundraiser to help restoration efforts.
Committee members and trustees will guide groups around a large part of the fence, along half of the 8.2km fence before cutting back down along a bush track, explaining the fence design and how the project is coming along.
Regular volunteer, and recent committee member Jenny Kerrisk says “this provides a great chance for people to get up along the fence line, on private property, and see some awesome views to the mountain, out east, and sometimes as far away as the South Island.”
Chairperson Joe Menzies adds “we can show-off the hard work and progress we are making, and hopefully in the process inspire some more people to come and help with this huge community project.
“It’s a significant conservation project on a national scale, and we want everyone in Taranaki to be a part of it.”
Lately the trust has been busy carrying out upgrades to the main walking track, and construction work has started on the three main buildings.
One of the buildings includes the original Mangamingi school building (1903), which will be the centre of the exciting new environmental education programme that is being offered to schools from Term 2 this year.
The Trust is also working hard to get rid of the last few pests inside the fence, and plans to start reintroducing endangered species such as kiwi and whiteheads within the next 12 months.
