ELTHAM'S Nicky Ward-Allen is still buzzing after competing in the International Tree Climbing Championships.

Held in St Louis, Missouri, USA, Nicky had outstanding success gaining second place in her specialist event the foot lock and claiming seventh place overall.

The foot lock involves scaling a 12m rope looped over a branch using her upper body strength and some great footwork.

For her efforts she received a silver medal and US$150.

The championships were held on July 27-28 and Nicky said she has learnt valuable skills from the experience.

"The men's champ, Beddes Strasser, it was his eighth title, just watching him climb was pretty awesome. I learned a lot of stuff they are pretty amazing people."

As well as the foot lock, Nicky competed in the throw line, aerial rescue, work climb, and belayed speed climb.

Nicky is now set to compete at the regional championships in Wellington in October before the nationals in Hamilton in November.

Nicky would like to hear from anyone who is interested in learning the sport.

"It is a great sport you get an entire workout. It is especially good if you want to get fit and strong. I have spare gear and would love to teach the sport to others," she said.
