NOW summer is over, anyone wanting to climb high up the mountain is warned to do it safely, especially summit climbers, as snow and ice has fallen to below 2000 metres.
Ian McAlpine, of Mt Taranaki Guided Tours, said this summer the ice in the crater had melted to a very low level, the second to lowest he can remember. The lowest was in 1999.
Ian and Glenys Grant climbed to the summit on Saturday via the North Ridge, and he said weather conditions were very good with awesome views. Crampons and ice axes were required.
“From now on, climbers intending to attempt the summit or go walking on the snow and ice, require full winter kit, including ice axes and crampons, and they need to know how to use them.
“People intending on climbing the mountain should gain current information from the Department of Conservation visitors centres, or take advantage of hiring a local guide.
“It is important for all to have fun out there. Remember the mountain is not for you or against you, but drop your guard and it will get you every time.”
