Loo plan gets go ahead

Travellers on The Forgotten World Highway will soon have another place to make a pitstop with Stratford District Council last week giving the green light for a public toilet between Taumaranui and Whangamomona.

Last year the toilet was a much-debated topic, with the council split mainly due to the price tag. One of the options previously touted included a self-cleaning Exeloo at an initial cost of $60,000 and a toilet of $45,000 proposed for the council's long-term plan.

However, TSB Trust has since pledged $25,000 and a cheaper alternative has been identified, chief executive Sue Davidson told the council last Tuesday.

A self-contained toilet for $33,000 is available, which will cost the council an initial $8000 in capital outlay. The upkeep would cost ratepayers around $5000 per year.

Morgan's Grave was tabled as a possible site, but the council deleted it from the proposal to investigate other options.
