Four talented Stratford High School students have proved their worth against other secondary schools in the region, winning the Newspapers in Education Competition, held at Devon Intermediate, for their excellent knowledge of the world around them.
The Year 9 students, Henry Marchant, Tracy Kivell, Kelly West and Samuel Rine took out first place after answering a series of questions about geography, general knowledge, naming people and current affairs, despite competing against teams with older members. They were very happy with the win.
"We were stoked we won! We weren't in the lead till the last round so we came from behind to take the win," said Henry.
To prepare for the competition, all the team members read a lot of newspapers and tried to watch the news every day. Their task was made easier because they are required to spend time each week learning about current affairs at school.
"We didn't really know what to expect. We tried to prepare but we were a bit nervous going to the competition," said Henry.
The team was tripped up by a few hairy questions, including naming the Governor-General (Anand Satyandand for those of us who didn't know either!), and they worked hard at the 'Who am I?' round, gaining enough points to earn a well deserved win.
The young team were surprised by their success and they hope to keep up with current affairs.
"We weren't expecting to win but we are really glad we did! All that research paid off and we'll hopefully keep reading newspapers and watching the news."
