SEVENTEEN children representing Central Taranaki rural primary schools competed for the prestigious Amy Smith and Don Walter tennis trophies at Stratford High School on December 9.

Kelly Jury of Makahu won the girl’s title and the Don Walter Cup for the third consecutive year.

Kelly scored a maximum 105 points, winning all her matches.

Second place went to Connie Poletti, also of Makahu, with 99 points. Third was Roma Poletti with 91 points.

Curtis Boyde of Ngaere won the boy’s competition and the Amy Smith Barometer, with a maximum 120 points, winning all his matches.

Second place went to Jack Jordon of Toko with 115 points, followed by Justin Bishop of Makahu with 106 points.

The tournament originated in Douglas in 1952 as a memorial to the late Amy Smith (nee Walter), a keen tennis player and ardent supporter of the sport.

The competition was formerly played between Eastern District schools as both a doubles and singles tournament.

In recent years other Central Taranaki rural schools have joined the tournament, with the format changed to singles play.
