FORTY St Joseph’s School students from Room 5 and Room 9 went to Lake Rotokare on Thursday, April 29, to learn about wildlife and pests.
The trip was part of a pilot programme to conserve the local wildlife. Melissa Jacobson, environmental educator for the Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust, has developed the programme.
Student teacher Lauren Procter says, “The students went on the all-day trip to learn about wildlife and pests.”
A big fence has been built around the lake and the surrounding area to keep the pests away from the wildlife, so the wildlife can live freely without risk from predators.
The students, teachers and parents began their trip in the morning with a 1½-2 hour walk with an activity sheet. The students had to used their senses to help them answer the questions.
This was followed in the afternoon by six rotational activities; these included identifying animal droppings and identifying whether an animal should be inside or outside the fence.
“The weather was great and the students all had a great time,” says Lauren.
