Holly Coplestone with her grandparents
In honour of the International Day for the Older Person, the Positive Ageing Steering Committee invited locals to a morning tea at the Stratford District Council Chambers on Monday.
The first of many planned initiatives, the morning tea celebrated fellowship in the elderly community, and the committee hopes this and future events will help identify and meet their needs.
The morning tea was also the perfect opportunity to announce the winner of the council's 'My Gorgeous Grandparents' competition.
Entrants were required to write about their grandparents and how they are special to them.
Seven-year-old Holly Coplestone from Ngaere School won, thanks to this fantastic story about her Nan and Granddad: My Gourgeous gradparents are Nan and Grandad. Everybody else calls them Sue and Brian Tipler but they are my Grandad and Nan. I have to share them with my five cousins ans sister but that is OK.
I love my Nan. She gives me lollies. I am spoilt. She always gives me my favourite food, not like at home. My Nan knits wonderful warm jerseys for me in the winter. Nan lets me play with her stuff. Sometimes I make a terrible mess. Nan says, "That's OK, Hollypops." Nan comes to my school plays, assemblys and sports days.
I love my Grandad. He plays with me. When we get the wood he gives me a ride in the wheel barrow. I watch TV with my Grandad but it is not a good idea to sit to close to him because he tickles me.
My Nan is wonderful. She is a special person in the world. My Grandad is the funniest grandad. He is a gorgeous Grandad. I love my Nan and Grandad because they love me.
