GOLFERS enjoyed a fine day for the first round of matches in the Matchplay Championships, a day that had some surprises.
In the Intermediates, only two survived out of the top 8 seeds with 2nd 3rd and 4th seeds W Dymond, L Eagar and T Johnson losing to C Merson, C Meredith and M Cook respectively, in what is proving to be an even division.
In the Juniors, all eight of the top seeds survived, but it was a close thing for top seed B Swindlehurst, who, all square on the last tee, won the hole with a 5. His opponent D Robertson didn’t go away empty handed, he won the jackpot with two two’s in a good effort.
Another round of matches this week, with stableford for those not involved in matches.
On Sunday we have the 36-hole Egmont Championship Tournament, with Taranaki’s best amateur golfers involved. We have included a Junior Ladies division off the yellow tees to cater for ladies that would like to play.

Ladies Golf
MATCHES for the 2010 Ladies Golf Championships are underway.
The senior championship final will be contested between Diana de Jong and Ann Braithwaite, after Diana defeated Pauline Downs 3 and 2 in the only semi-final match in that division.
Results so far in the Intermediate/ Bronze 1 division are: Vivian Todd beat Diane Severinsen, Sandra Hancock beat Sheryl Stanners, Jill Evans beat Jan Worthington and Mary McQuay beat Jenny Oien.
There were several “byes” in the first round of the Bronze 2/Junior division, with Mandy Aish defeating Shirley Cawley in the only match played.
In the next round wins were recorded for Flo Coburn against Sharyn Buchanan, Bobbie Oliver against Christine Taylor and Maxine Trotter against Heather Vivian . Championship matchplay will continue over the next two weeks with the finals to be played mid-October.
Those not with matches to play will play a separate competition on club days. Starters for next Tuesday, September 14, are Marlene Ridley and Gwelfa Burgess.
