The Stratford Art Society presents their exciting bi-annual art exhibition showcasing a range of local talent including new members exhibiting for the first time, which the society says offers a great opportunity to purchase beautiful, original Christmas gifts.

The exhibition opens on Friday at 7.30pm and runs until December 14 in the Percy Thomson Gallery. Guest speaker Ruth Harvey, curator of Pictorial Collection from Puke Ariki, also judge of recent Taranaki National Art Awards, will be officially opening the exhibition.

Gallery director Sue Morton says: "There will be a visual variety of members' work, including Maree Liddington's stunning tapestry weaving - Nga-Motu. I am always interested in the direction the artists are heading and they never fail to amaze me."

On display will be the usual wide range of media including wood turning, pottery, textile, photography, painting and sculpture along with the usual surprises.

The society also plans on having a sales table for art books and magazines and a "pot luck" Christmas hamper raffle.

Stratford's plumber-artist Wayne Lobb is one of the artists exhibiting at the Stratford Art Society's member exhibition, opening on Friday at the Percy Thomson Gallery in Stratford.

Wayne is well known for his sculptures made from recycled plumbing material and imbued with humour. One of his pieces that will be exhibited at the gallery is on the British sitcom Fawlty Towers' hunting lodge, with a cap hanging off a deer's antler. Wayne's work is unique. He says he gets a "weird" idea, "works it" and does not make the same thing twice.

Entry to the gallery is free, open weekdays 10.30am-4pm, weekends 10.30am-3pm.
