WHAT started six years ago as a garden festival on the fringe of the original one is now the biggest in the country.
The Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival  was launched on Saturday at the TET stadium in Inglewood.
The festival is now the biggest one in the country, and last  year drew between 45,000 and 49,000 visitors, says Taranaki Garden Trust chairman Michael Self.
This year the festival, which runs from October 29 to November 7, includes 90 gardens and places of interest, including a vintage farm machinery trail.
There is one new Central Taranaki garden in the festival this year, Jill Gorrie’s property Gorrieville, in Eltham.
On October 29 New Zealand Post will launch a fringe festival stamp, a first for any gardening event in New Zealand.
