Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week was on the minds of all the students at St Patrick's School in Inglewood on Monday and they spent the afternoon picking up rubbish from the streets surrounding the school to honour the nationwide drive.

The school has spent the past term studying 'Our Sacred World' and have focused on taking care of the planet and protecting its resources.

The junior students made portraits of themselves out of recycled materials and the senior students focused on oil, its properties, both positive and harmful and what might happen when it runs out.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week was the perfect opportunity to put into practice what the children had learned and the enthusiastic students found over 40 bags of rubbish between them.

Principal Annette Ormerod thought that the topic study and the practical learning would encourage the children to be more aware of the planet. "We are hoping the children will come out of this with a good sense of wasteful consumerism and the importance of keeping our country beautiful."
