ELTHAM’S attempt to break the record for the world’s biggest scone is taking place this week, and a massive purpose-built oven was test-driven on Tuesday for the occasion.
Shaun McCarthy and Annette McGregor from Eltham  4 Square are behind the attempt, which will take place in the town’s Stark Park this Thursday afternoon and evening.
The previous record was set last year in Bedfordshire in the UK with a scone weighing 60 kilograms.
The Eltham team are planning a sweet scone, from a 100kg mix, consisting of 70kg of flour, plus huge quantities of butter, milk, sugar and baking powder.
The aim is to have the scone listed as the biggest in the Guinness Book of Records.
The mix for the test run on Tuesday contained 30kg of flour, plus the other ingredients.
A giant stainless steel over has been made to bake the big scone by Carac Couplings in Eltham and John Burling spent two days making and testing the oven, which is heated with two gas barbeques. A giant baking dish rolls out from the oven to be loaded with the huge mix.
The attempt on Thursday will begin at about midday and the weigh-in will be filmed live by Close Up on TV1.
