CAMERON and Scott Keegan.

FROM a young age, both Scott and Cameron Keegan have had a passion for all-terrain vehicle (ATV) action, and the past couple of weeks have seen them doing well in national ATV championship competitions.

The first of the brothers' recent successes came on Saturday, November 15, at the New Zealand ATV Champs held in Patetonga with Scott (18) taking second place in the 301-425cc race. He competed against 11 others.

"I had to race eight laps around a motor-cross track," said Scott, "and me and the guy who came first were quite close throughout the race. We left the other guys in the race far behind."

Scott followed up his second place success with a win at the Waikato Championship only a few days later, taking on six of the best riders in another eight lap frenzy at Otorohanga.

"It was hard just holding on with the power of the bike. I just had to keep going, even though my body was getting shaken."

Scott, a building student at the Western Institute of Technology in Taranaki (WITT) has been interested in motor-cross since he was only three or four-years-old, training on an LT50 as a child.

These days he and brother Cameron (19) train when and where they can, whether it's around the farm or twice a week in New Plymouth at the Barrett Road Training Track. Cameron himself has had recent success in his chosen class, 0-750cc. coming sixth out of 26 of New Zealand's finest at Patetonga.

"It was a tough race," said Cameron, "and I'd only just qualified for it."

Like Scott, Cameron's race was eight laps and he was pleased that he'd done as well as he had.

As far as competing in championships in the future, Scott is feeling especially confident about further success.

"To win was mint, so I'll keep my eye out for competitions I can sign up for. I feel pretty confident I could do well again," he said.
